A cough is basically a reflex action so the airways can be cleared of phlegm, mucus and other irritants like dust and smoke. An inflammation of the upper respiratory tract due to a virus could also cause a cough.

Coughing can be symptomatic of many conditions including bronchitis, asthma, the common cold, flu, whooping cough or smoking. There are even some prescribed medicines that can cause coughing such as ACE-inhibitors which are used to treat heart failure.

Sometimes a cough can be a symptom of an underlying serious medical condition such as heart failure, lung cancer, tuberculosis, pneumonia or a pulmonary embolism (which is a clot on the lung). Coughs that have been caused by things like flu or the common cold normally disappear after a few days, but coughs that have been caused by an infection of the lung, such as bronchitis, could persist for several weeks, even after the infection has cleared up and this is due to the inflammation of the airways which usually take a while to clear up.

Cough Mechanism and Receptors

If someone has been suffering from a cough for more than a couple of weeks after having a viral infection, they should go to their doctor for medical advice.

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder otherwise known as trisomy and it is where an individual has inherited an additional or extra copy of a particular chromosome. In the case of Down’s syndrome, the affected individuals have three copies rather than two of chromosome 21. The consequence of this additional copy is that it changes the balance of the body resulting in characteristic intellectual and physical features.

Down Syndrome

There are three kinds of Down’s syndrome: regular trisomy 21 which is where all the cells in the body have an extra chromosome 21 and is the most common type of the condition with nearly 94% affected with Down’s having it; translocation, which is where extra chromosome 21 material attaches to another chromosome, and four percent have this type; and mosaic, which is where only some of the cells have additional chromosome 21. This usually has milder features than the other two types and only two percent of affected individuals have mosaic.

Down syndrome sufferers look different to normal people and usually have a flat type of facial profile with eyes slanting upwards. Smaller ears, protruding tongue and a flat back of the head are other features. Individuals affected tend to be shorter than normal, have poor muscle tone and have broad, short hands. Half the affected individuals have a heart defect, which can be treated in some, but not others. Some have problems with their gut, making it difficult to eat while increasing the risk of constipation and thyroid problems.

There is no cure for Down syndrome but there are treatments available for the accompanying symptoms as well as support for the learning difficulties.

ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to give it its proper name, is a behavioral disorder which affects approximately ten percent of school age kids. What is interesting is that it actually affects about three times as many boys as it does girls, but as of yet nobody is quite sure why this happens to be the case.

Children that have ADHD are usually hyperactive, do not focus well and normally act without thinking it through first. Although as a rule they understand the things that are expected of them, they find it difficult to carry this out as they are unable to pay attention, sit still or focus on details.

As everyone is probably aware though, most children, especially the younger ones, act like this frequently, especially if they are excited, but ADHD affected kids are different as such because the symptoms last over a long period of times and can be triggered be a variety of reasons, not just excitement or anxiety. ADHD can hinder the ability of a child to function properly at school, at home or when they are out and about.

Although difficult to diagnose, ADHD can be managed with the proper treatment and the children affected can learn to manage their symptoms successfully.
