Autism is a type of brain disorder that affects the way individuals understand and hence, react with the world about them. Because of this, these people tend to act differently to others. On encountering an autistic child, someone would be hard-pressed to distinguish between the child and other “healthy” children around them. As there are no obvious external clues that visually tell us a child or person is autistic, these individuals are often mistakenly identified as naughty (in children) or rude.

Most autistic people have an exceptionally hard time trying to convey what they want to say or require, and others may end up saying the same things over and over again. This difficulty in understanding causes great confusion among the autistic, and although they can hear everything that is said to them, they cannot grasp the gist of what is being said.

Autism In Children

Mood swings are another symptom of autism. A person may be fine one moment but will have a mood change in a flash. This often happens because they can’t explain to people properly what they want. There are simple things that can trigger the mood swings as well. Anything from using the wrong dish for a meal to parking in the wrong spot can cause the person to change.

Autism is classed as a “spectrum disorder” which basically means the symptoms and characteristics of the condition are never the same in any two people. One thing that is common to all autism sufferers though is that they all have a hard time making sense of the world around them.

Mastitis is when the breast becomes inflamed, usually due to an infection. It is most common in breastfeeding mothers and usually occurs in the initial few weeks of breastfeeding, or when a woman suddenly stops the breastfeeding and the breast fills with unused milk. The infection normally occurs when bacteria enter the breast milk ducts either through a sore or crack in the nipple.

Once infection has occurred, it can cause a small area of hardness, redness, pain and some swelling of the breast. It normally starts at or near the nipple area and sufferers can also develop a fever along with a general feeling of being unwell.

Mastitis is normally treated by antibiotics, although some mild cases can go without any treatment. Once a course of antibiotics begin to treat the condition, it normally clears up within a few days. Sometimes a breast infected with mastitis may develop an abscess (collection of pus) which would then need draining via a syringe.

One other point about mastitis that an infected individual should bear in mind is the following: if the individual is still breastfeeding, then they should continue to do so from the infected breast. This will assist the flow of milk and stop the breast from becoming engorged and therefore making matters worse. This process will not harm the baby and any bacteria that may be swallowed by the infant will be destroyed by the stomach acid.

A food allergy occurs when someone’s immune system reacts adversely to a particular type of food. When this happens it causes inflammation in certain bodily tissues and can even be life threatening. A food allergy should not be confused with food intolerance because, although in both situations the body can react to even a very small amount of food, food intolerance is not caused by an individual’s immune system; rather, it’s the digestive system.

Although actual food allergies are very rare and tend to run in the family, some people avoid consuming specific foods because they are under the mistaken assumption that they’re allergic to them. On average, only one in hundred adults and three in a hundred infants have food allergies. An individual would be more at risk if they or their family suffer from any allergic conditions such as asthma, eczema or hay fever. Only a medical professional will be able to diagnose somebody as having a food allergy.

In principle, people could be allergic to any type of food, but the most common ones appear to be the following: milk, fish, shellfish, eggs, wheat, soya beans, peanuts and certain fruit and veg.

Food allergies are usually diagnosed by blood or skin tests, or a going through a food elimination program.
