Zyprexa

Other Names: Olanzapine

Commonly Prescribed for: Zyprexa is used to tread mental disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

How to take it: It should be administered on a daily schedule with a dosage that your doctor has prescribe you. The starting dosage generally ranges from 5mg to 20mg. Occasionally Zyprexa can be used with other drugs such as Fluoxetine to help combat depression. It can take up to 4 weeks for the drug to take effect so you should continue your treatment even if you feel that it is not working properly in the first few weeks of use.

How it Works: Zyprexa is a strange drug that has never really had a proven and accepted theory as it how it works even though it has shown to help alleviate depression. It is thought that it balances out the chemicals in the brain so that the balance is more natural than it would be without the drug.

Some Side Effects: Zyprexa can have some emergency side effects such as difficulty breathing, swelling of throat and lips and severe muscle pain. If any of these problems appear then urgent medical attention should be sought. More common effects include: headaches, agitation, nausea, weight gain and constipation. None of which require medical attention unless they become unbearable or last for a significant period of time.
