Ziagen

Other Names: Abacavir Sulfate

Commonly Prescribed for: Ziagen is used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and to stop its growth and spread throughout a patient.

How to take it: Ziagen comes in two different forms: tablet and oral solution. The dosage of Ziagen in tablet form that is recommended for adults is 600 mg per day in either one dose or two doses of 300 mg. For the oral solution designed for pediatric patients agent 3 months or older 8mg twice per day is recommended.  There is Abacavir Hypersensitivity Registry that has been created that is used to store and record hypersensitivity on a case by case basis. How it Works: Ziagen performs in a similar way to Zerit in that it does not cure HIV per say but rather it halts is spread and growth by affecting the Reverse transcriptase’s that allow the disease to reproduce.
Some Side Effects:

Common side effects: of Ziagen can range from headaches to tiredness to nausea and vomiting. They types of symptoms usually do not require medical treatment.  However if any of the following should arise seek medical treatment immediately: severe allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, fainting, fever, chest pain, blistering or unusually dizziness.  It should also be noted with importance than Ziagen does NOT halt the spread of HIV during sexual intercourse.
