Commonly Prescribed For: Valtrex is an antiviral drug, prescribed for treating infections like genital herpes, cold sores and chickenpox due to herpes virus. It retards the increase and spread of the virus. It is commonly combined with other medication.
How to Take It: Valtrex is available as tablets taken by mouth. To treat herpes is usually taken twice a day for five days. To treat shingles is usually taken three times a day for one week. For best results Valtrex should be taken as soon as the first symptoms appear.
How it Works: Valtrex fights against the herpes virus by slowing it down from replicating itself in the human system thereby permitting the body to aid in the natural resistance of the spread of this virus. By this means Valtrex ultimately limits both the frequency and duration of outbreak.
Some Side Effects: Valtrex may cause abdominal pain, skin rash, constipation, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, joint pain, dizziness, heartburn, dry mouth and headache. Some serious side effects include depression, fast heartbeat and easy bleeding.
