Selegiline
Other Names: Eldepryl, Zelapar.
Commonly Prescribed For: Selegiline is generally prescribed for controlling the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease (a nervous system disorder that leads to difficulties with muscle control and balance) in patients who take Sinemet. This medication can also be used for thwart the effects of Sinemet from wearing off amid doses. It is commonly used with other medications.
How to Take it: Selegiline is available in the form of a capsule, an orally dissolving tablet to be taken via mouth. The capsule is normally taken two times every day along with breakfast and lunch. The orally dissolving tablet is normally taken once every day before having breakfast without food, or with other liquids. Take this medication as prescribed.
How it Works: Selegiline belongs to a group of drugs known as monoamine oxidase type-B inhibitors. This medication works to increase the quantity of dopamine in the brain.
Some Side Effects: Common side effects include dizziness, sores in the mouth, lightheadedness, fainting, rash, dry mouth, blotches on the skin, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain or weakness, stomach pain, depression, difficulty swallowing, sleepiness, heartburn, unusual dreams, diarrhea, difficulty falling asleep, and gas. Some serious side effects include severe headache, difficulty breathing, chest pain, hallucinations, fast or irregular heartbeat, difficult to control abnormal movements, sweating, stiff or sore neck, and severe nausea.
