Rifampin

Other Names: Rifadin, Rimactane.

Commonly Prescribed For: Rifampine is generally prescribed for eliminating bacteria that leads to tuberculosis. This medication is combined with other drugs for treating tuberculosis or eliminating Neisseria meningitidis. It is commonly used with other medications.

How to Take it: Rifampine is available in the form of a capsule to be taken via mouth. This medication is normally taken once every day. Take Rifampine an hour before or two hours after taking meals, on an empty stomach. Take this medication as prescribed.

How it Works: Rifampin belongs to a group of drugs known as semisynthetic derivative. This medication works to inhibit the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase and hence prevents the formation of chain in RNA synthesis.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, muscle pain, chills, bone pain, stomach cramps, heartburn, and vomiting. Some serious side effects include skin rash, yellowing of the skin, and sores in the mouth.
