Ribavirin
Other Names: Copegus, Rebetol.
Commonly Prescribed For: Ribavirin can be used alone or combined with other medications for treating hepatitis C. This medication can also be used sometimes for treating viral hemorrhagic fevers. It can be used for treating severe acute respiratory syndrome. It is commonly used with other medications.
How to Take it: Ribavirin is available in the form of a tablet, oral solution, and as a capsule to be taken via mouth. This medication is normally taken two times every day in the dawn and in the evening. The capsules are taken either with food or without food. Take this medication as prescribed, around the same time daily.
How it Works: Ribavirin belongs to a group of drugs known as nucleoside analogues. This medication works to thwart the virus that leads to hepatitis C from spreading to other parts in the body.
Some Side Effects: Common side effects include cough, hair loss, upset stomach, muscle or bone pain, vomiting, irregular menstruation, constipation, sweating, heartburn, itchy skin, loss of appetite, difficulty falling asleep, weight loss, dry mouth, unusual taste, difficulty concentrating and memory loss. Some serious side effects include hives, inflammation of the face, lips, hands, or lower legs, intolerance to cold, difficulty breathing or swallowing, bloody diarrhea, irritability, excessive worry, black or tarry tools, mood changes, unusual bleeding or bruising, pain in the stomach and vision changes.
