Phenytoin
Other Names: Dilantin, Phenytek.
Commonly Prescribed For: Phenytoin is generally prescribed for treating and preventing seizures that begins after surgery to nervous system. This medication can also be used for controlling irregular heartbeat. Phenytoin is commonly used with other medications.
How to Take it: Phenytoin is available in the form of an extended-release capsule, as a suspension liquid, and as a chewable tablet o be taken via mouth. The chewable tablet is normally taken 2 to 3 times every day. The extended-release capsules are normally taken one to four times every day. Do not chew or crush the extended-release capsule, instead swallow the capsules entirely. Take this medication as prescribed, around the same time daily.
How it Works: Phenytoin belongs to a group of drugs known as anticonvulsants. This medication works to reduce unusual electrical activity in your brain.
Some Side Effects: Common side effects include difficulty falling asleep, curving of the penis, uncontrollable eye movements, overgrowth of gums, loss of coordination, enlargement of lips, confusion, coarsening of facial features, slowed thinking, unwanted hair growth, abnormal body movements, constipation, slowed thinking, and vomiting. Serious side effects include swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, fever, and loss of appetite, blisters, unusual bruising or bleeding, rash, excessive tiredness, and yellowing of the skin.
