Commonly Prescribed For: Pheniramine is a combination medication, generally prescribed for treating runny nose and other symptoms, such as ear congestion, and itchy throat caused due to allergies, including hay fever, sinusitis, and common cold.

How to Take it: Pheniramine is available in the form of tablets, as capsules, and as sustained release tablets to be taken via mouth. Nearly 8 ounces of this medication is normally taken along with water, either with food or without food. Chew and crush the chewable tablets thoroughly before swallowing. Do not chew or break the sustained-release tablets, instead swallow the tablets entirely. Take this medication as prescribed, around the same time daily.

How it Works: Pheniramine belongs to a group of drugs known as antihistamine. This medication works to constrict the blood vessels and hence reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, constipation, dizziness, shaking, dry mouth, upset stomach, sore throat, headache, blurred vision, irritability, fast heartbeat, restlessness, dry nose, and trouble sleeping. Some serious side effects include fast or irregular heartbeat, weakness, mood or mental changes, difficulty urinating, hallucination, rash, inflammation of the face, or tongue, and ringing in the ears.
