Commonly Prescribed For: Pepcid is generally prescribed to treat heartburn, normally associated with acid indigestion. This medication can also be used to prevent heartburn that is associated with sour stomach due to drinking some foods and beverages.

How to Take it: Pepcid is available in the form of tablets to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken two hours before or after consuming cephalosporins, either with food or without food.

How it Works: Pepcid belongs to a group of drugs known as H2 blockers. This medication works to decrease stomach acid by blocking histamine (a natural chemical), which stimulates the discharge of acid into your stomach. The tablet is taken an hour before taking food along with water to prevent symptoms of heartburn. Take this medication as prescribed.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include constipation, headache, and diarrhea. Some serious side effects include rash, convulsions, hives, continuing stomach pain, difficulty breathing, inflammation of the face, or tongue, seizures, and tightness in the chest.
