Loperamide
Other Names: Diamode, Imodium
Commonly Prescribed For: Loperamide is normally prescribed for treating diarrhea. It retards the rhythm of digestion, which lets the small intestines to absorb more nutrients and liquids from foods. This medication can also be used to decrease the quantity of stool in people with ileostomy. Loperamide is commonly used with other medications.
How to Take it: Loperamide is available in the form of a tablet, liquid and as a capsule to take via mouth. Take this medication as prescribed. Make sure to drink plenty of water to replace water loss due to diarrhea. Take Loperamide once or twice a day to treat chronic diarrhea. Chew and crush the chewable tablet before swallowing.
How it Works: Loperamide decreases the movement of myenteric plexus that reduces the tone of smooth muscles. It also reduces colonic mass movements and hence suppresses gastrocolic reflex.
Some Side Effects: Common side effects include dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, constipation, drowsiness, stomach pain and vomiting. Serious side effects include skin rash, difficulty breathing, hives and wheezing.
