Commonly Prescribed For: Lithobid is normally prescribed for treating symptoms of mania (abnormally excited mood) in individuals with bipolar disorder.

How to Take it: Lithobid is available in the form of a tablet, solution (liquid), as a capsule, an extended-release (long-acting tablet) tablet to take via mouth. This medication is normally taken 3 to 4 times every day. The extended-release tablets are normally taken 2 to 3 times every day. Do not chew or crush the extended-release tablet, instead swallow the tablet entirely.

How it Works: Lithobid belongs to a group of drugs known as antimanic agents. It decreases the anomalous activity in the brain.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include restlessness, brittle fingernails, loss of appetite, joint or muscle pain, stomach pain or bloating, depression, gas, constipation, indigestion, discomfort, weight loss or gain, hair loss, dry mouth, acne, excessive saliva in mouth, swollen lips, unusual taste and tongue pain. Serious side effects include tiredness, itching, muscle weakness, paleness, loss of coordination, changes in vision, diarrhea, discolored fingers and toes, vomiting, slurred speech, frequent urination, hallucinations, giddiness, chest tightness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, jerky movements, seizures and blackouts.
