Lithium Carbonate

Other Names: Eskalith CR Lithobid, Eskalith.

Commonly Prescribed For: Lithium Carbonate is used for treating manic episodes of manic-depressive disease. This medication can be used to control several symptoms related to mania that includes poor judgment, hospitality, reduced need for sleep, feelings of grandiosity, elation, unrealistic ideas, aggressiveness and hyper-activity.

How to Take it: Lithium is available as long-acting capsules. Take Lithium immediately after having meals to avoid stomach upset. It is advisable to drink plenty of water while taking Lithium. Always take a balanced diet with lots of liquids to reduce the risk of side effects. So not crush or chew the long-acting capsules, instead swallow the capsule entirely.

How it Works: Lithium Carbonate works by alleviating the mood and hence decreases extremes in behavior.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, increase in he count of white blood cells, lethargy, electrocardiographic abnormalities, excessive thirst and urination, dental issues, loss of appetite, rashes, lack of coordination, blurred vision, muscle weakness and thyroid insufficiency. Serious side effects include tremors, frequent urination, vomiting, discomfort and nausea.
