Other Names: Synthroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid.

Commonly Prescribed For: Levothroid is a thyroid hormone, normally prescribed for treating hypothyroidism (lack of thyroid production by the thyroid gland). Levothroid is said to reverse certain symptoms like slow speech, increased cold, weight gain and lack of energy, when taken properly. It is commonly used with other medications.

How to Take it: Levothroid is available in the form of a tablet to take via mouth. It is normally taken once, half an hour prior to taking breakfast on an empty stomach. Take the tablets along with water to prevent choking in your throat.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include weight loss, temporary hair loss, tremor, sensitivity to heat, headache, changes in menstrual cycle, nausea, fever, vomiting, increased appetite, diarrhea, excessive sweating, stomach cramps, insomnia and nervousness. Serious side effects include chest pain and irregular heartburn.
