Lansoprazole
Other Names: Prevacid, Prevacid NapraPAC, Prevacid Solu Tab, Prevpac
Commonly Prescribed For: Lansoprazole is normally prescribed for treating ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a condition where the stomach generates excess acid); gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions. At times, it can be combined with other medications for eliminating H. pyroli bacteria, which leads to ulcer.
How to Take it: Lansoprazole is available in the form of granules, delayed release (long-acting) capsules and delayed release solution to be taken by mouth. It is normally taken once every day before having meals. It is taken either two times a day or 3 times a day at regular intervals for a period of two weeks. The capsule must be swallowed entirely.
How it Works: Lansoprazole belongs to a group of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. It blocks the acid production sites and reduces the quantity of acid secreted in the stomach.
Some Side Effects: Common side effects include stomach pain, unusual weakness, diarrhea, sore tongue, constipation and numbness. Some serious side effects include rash, trouble breathing and itching.
