Haloperidol

Other names: Haldol.

Commonly prescribed for: Haloperidol is generally prescribed for treating psychotic disorders. This medication can also be used for controlling motor tics and verbal tics in people suffering from Tourette’s disorder. It can also be used for treating severe behavioral problems, including hyperactivity in children for whom other medications did not work.

How to take it: Haloperidol is available in the form of a tablet, and as a liquid to be taken via mouth. This medication is normally taken 2 to 3 times every day. Take this medication as prescribed, around the same time daily.

How it works: Haloperidol belongs to a group of drugs known as conventional antipsychotics. This medication works to decrease unusual excitement in the brain.

Side effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, difficulty urinating, dry mouth, increased sexual desire, increased saliva, missed menstrual period, blurred vision, breast milk production, loss of appetite, headache, constipation, mood changes, diarrhea, nervousness, heartbeat, agitation, nausea, restlessness, vomiting, uncontrollable movements of parts of the body, difficulty falling asleep, and uncontrollable eye movements. Some serious side effects include fever, yellowing of the skin, muscle stiffness, rash, confusion, decreased vision, fast or irregular heartbeat, eye pain or discoloration, decreased thirst, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and neck cramps.
