Glibenclamide

Other names: Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase, Euglucon.

Commonly used for: Glibenclamide is generally prescribed for treating type 2 diabetes in people for whom diet and other medication failed to control blood sugar level. This medication is used to increase the ability of pancreas to secret more insulin.  It is commonly used with other medications.

How to take it: Glibenclamide is available in the form of a tablet to be taken via mouth. 15 mg of the medication is normally taken every day after taking breakfast. Take this medication as prescribed.

How it works: Glibenclamide belongs to a group of drugs known as sulphonylurea. This medication works to simulate pancreatic cells to secrete more insulin. This in turn helps to reduce the quantity of sugar present in the blood of patients suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Side effects: Common side effects include disturbances of the gut, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, and vomiting, cholestatic jaundice, low blood glucose level, inflammation of the liver, temporary visual disturbances, disturbances in liver function, and weight gain.
