Gabapentin

Commonly prescribed for: Gabapentin is generally prescribed for controlling some types of seizures in people suffering from epilepsy. This medication can also be used for relieving pain of postherpetic neuralgia. It can be used sometimes for relieving pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. It is commonly used with other medications.

How to take it: Gabapentin is available in the form of a capsule, a liquid, and as a tablet to be taken via mouth. This medication is normally taken three times every day along with water, either with food or without food. It is taken at an interval of 12 hours. Take this medication as prescribed.

How it works: Gabapentin belongs to a group of drugs known as anticonvulsants. This medication works to decrease unusual excitement in the brain in order to treat seizures. It is also used to relieve pain associated with PHN.

Side effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, fever, tiredness or weakness, back or joint pain, dizziness, inflammation of the hands, or lower legs, dizziness, weight gain, headache, constipation, double or blurred vision, weight gain, itchy eyes, dry mouth, unsteadiness, diarrhea, unsteadiness, vomiting, anxiety, nausea, and unusual thoughts. Some serious side effects include rash, seizures, itching, and difficulty breathing or swallowing.
