Furosemide

Commonly Prescribed For: Furosemide is prescribed for treating people with fluid retention due to conditions such as nephrotic syndrome, congestive heart failure, kidney disease or liver disease.  Furosemide can also sometimes be used in the treatment of hypertension.

How to Take It: Furosemide should be taken as directed by your doctor. The job of Furosemide is to make you urinate more often and this could cause dehydration.  You should make sure you drink a lot of water to replace fluids which are lost during urination.  Furosemide tablets are usually taken once per day in the morning.  If you need it, your doctor may advise you to have another dose 6-8 hours later. For treating high blood pressure, Furosemide is usually split into two doses.

How It Works: Furosemide works by stopping the body from absorbing excess salt and by making the kidneys rid the body of any excess salt through the urine.

Some Side Effects: Side Effects of Furosemide can include constipation, abdominal pain, numbness, headaches, constipation, blurred vision or dizziness. Serious side effects can include allergic reactions such as tight chest; trouble breathing; swelling of face mouth or tongue; rash; itching or hives.  Other severe side effects can include drowsiness; palpitations; nausea; vomiting; bruising or bleeding easily; muscle pain; decrease in urination; dry mouth; weakness; hearing loss; lightheadedness or loss of appetite.
