Frusemide

Other Names: Lasix

Commonly Prescribed For: Frusemide is prescribed for the treatment of fluid retention or swelling caused by conditions such as heart or liver disease. It can also be used to treat hypertension.

How to Take It: Frusemide is usually taken in tablet form once per day. As these tablets cause you to urinate more often it is advised to take them in the morning to help you avoid the need to urinate at night. The frequent need to urinate usually reduces the longer you have been taking the medication. If you miss a dose you should take it once you remember as long as it is not too near to your next dose. Do not take two doses together. Frusemide should be stored at room temperature and should be kept away from moisture and heat.

How It Works: Frusemide works by making the kidneys expel any unwanted water and salt from the body through the urine. They clear the body of excess water by causing you to urinate more often.

Some Side Effects: Side effects of Frusemide may include blurred vision, thirst, headaches, constipation, weakness; confusion; vomiting, muscle cramps, vomiting, restlessness or dizziness. More serious side effects can include sore throat; bruising or bleeding easily; fever; ringing in the ears or loss of hearing; difficulty swallowing or sudden weight loss. Signs of a serious allergic reaction could include trouble breathing; tightness of the chest; rash; itching; hives or swollen face, lips or tongue.
