Commonly Prescribed For: Fosamax is prescribed for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis and also for osteoporosis caused by taking steroids.  It is also used for the treatment of Paget’s disease.

How to Take It: Fosamax should be taken as soon as you get up in the morning before eating or drinking.  You should also take this before taking any other medication.  The Fosamax tablet should be taken with a full glass of still water without food.  You must not eat or drink anything other than still water for the next 30 minutes and you should not lie down or recline in any way.  Fosamax is usually prescribed in conjunction with exercise, change of diet and the consumption of calcium and vitamin supplements.

How It Works: Fosamax works by slowing down bone loss and increasing bone mass.  This can help to prevent fractures of the bones.

Some Side Effects: Side effects of Fosamax can include diarrhea; stomach upset; joint pain or swelling; headaches; constipation; mild heartburn; swollen hands or feet; weakness or back pain.   Signs of an allergic reaction to the drug can include rash; trouble breathing; swelling of face, mouth or tongue; or, tightness in the chest.  Other serious side effects may include worsening heartburn; chest pain; severe bone or joint pain; numbness or swollen jaw; pain when swallowing or pain under the ribs or in the back.
