Flonase

Other Names: Veramyst

Commonly Prescribed For: Flonase is commonly prescribed for the treatment of nasal conditions such as congestion, runny nose or sneezing which are caused by allergies.

How to Take It: Flonase is a nasal spray which should be sprayed once or twice in each nostril once every day.  It should be shaken very well immediately before use.  Your doctor should be informed if you suffer from flu symptoms, fever, body aches, continuous nose bleeds, or sores in the nose while using the Flonase spray.  It should be stored standing up and should be disposed of after 120 uses even if some of the medication remains.  It should not be used by children under the age of four unless advised by a doctor.  Flonase can increase the risk of infection due to the fact that it lowers the blood cells in the body which can fight infection.  It is advisable therefore, for anyone using Flonase to stay away from people with infections.  Coming into contact with infectious diseases such as Chicken Pox or Measles can be fatal for someone using Flonase.

How It Works: Flonase works by stopping the body releasing substances which cause inflammation. It contains a corticosteroid called fluticasone which helps to prevent the body releasing this allergy causing substance.

Some Side Effects: Side effects of Flonase can include headaches; nausea; nosebleed; vomiting; nasal burning or irritation or vomiting.  More serious side effects can include severe, continuous nosebleeds; loss of sense of smell; strange nasal discharge; wheezing; nasal irritation; blurred vision or changes in vision or shortness of breath.  Signs of a serious allergic reaction could include trouble breathing; tightness of the chest; rash; itching; hives or swollen face, lips or tongue.
