Commonly Prescribed For: Flavoxate is prescribed for relieving nighttime urination and relieving the pain associated with frequent urination. Flavoxate is also sometimes prescribed to treat ulcers in conjunction with other medicines.
How to Take It: Flavoxate should be taken as instructed by your doctor. It comes in tablet form and should be swallowed with water. This medication can be taken with or without food but it may cause an upset stomach in some people. If this happens it is advisable to take the tablets with food to prevent stomach upset. A missed dose should be taken as soon as possible but do not take more than one dose at a time.
How It Works: Flavoxate works by reducing muscle spasms in the bladder. This results in a reduction in the pain caused due to spasms. Flavoxate also increases the bladder capacity and helps to reduce the frequent or urgent need to urinate.
Some Side Effects: Side effects of Flavoxate can include blurred vision, dizziness, insomnia, headaches, nausea, dry mouth, or nervousness. Severe side effects can include diarrhea, vomiting, palpitations, problems passing urine or symptoms of an allergic reaction such as rash; difficulty breathing; itching; swelling of the face mouth or tongue; or hives.
