Finasteride

Other Names: Propecia

Commonly Prescribed For: Finasteride is prescribed for the treatment of hair loss in men also known as alopecia.

How to Take It: Finasteride should be taken as instructed by your doctor.  It comes in tablet form and should be swallowed whole with water.  Finasteride can be taken with or without food and it is a good idea to take this at the same time each day to help build up a regular habit.  The medication should continue to be taken even on improvement of symptoms.  A missed dose should be skipped but continue as normal at the next dose.  Do not take more than one dose at a time. Finasteride should be stored at room temperature and should not be kept near heat or moisture.

How It Works: Finasteride works by reducing a hormone called dihydrostestosterone in the body.  This can stop some forms of hair loss which can occur in men.

Some Side Effects: Side Effects of Finasteride can include erectile dysfunction, decreased ejaculation, decreased sex drive or breast enlargement.  Serious side effects can include allergic reactions such as tight chest; trouble breathing; swelling of face mouth or tongue; rash; itching or hives.  There is also a possibility of other severe side effects such as lumps, nipple discharge, breast enlargement or testicular pain.
