Fenofibrate

Other Names: Antara, Fenoglide, Lofibra, Triglide

Commonly Prescribed For: Fenofibrate is prescribed for the treatment of high cholesterol, and for the presence of triglycerides in blood which can cause blocked arteries. Fenofibrate is usually prescribed in conjunction with the introduction of a low cholesterol diet.

How to Take It: Fenofibrate should only be taken as instructed by your doctor.  Larger doses should not be taken and it should not be taken for longer than prescribed.  It comes in tablet form and should be swallowed with a glass of water. Tablets should be taken whole and not crushed, broken or swallowed.  Tablets which have been damaged or chipped by accident should not be taken.   Fenofibrate should be taken with food to help with absorption.  Fenofibrate tablets should be kept free from moisture at room temperature. Alcohol should be avoided while taking Fenofibrate as this could result in damage to the liver.

How It Works: Fenofibrate works by increasing lipoprotein lipase production in the body.  This has the effect of breaking down the triglycerides and helps to eject them from the body.  Fenofibrate can also help to rid the body of the triglycerides which are expelled from the liver.  This all has the effect of lowering cholesterol levels.

Some Side Effects: Side Effects of Fenofibrate can include, pain in the joints, wind, indigestion or a skin rash.  Fenofibrate has been linked with a severe muscle side effect.  Symptoms of this can include strange muscle pain; weakness; or flu symptoms such as fever. Other serious side effects can include nausea, vomiting, weakness, or abdominal pain.
