Feldene

Other Names: Piroxicam

Commonly Prescribed For: Feldene is prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  It can also be used to provide relief from the pain associated with dysmenorrhoea (severe menstrual pain), and post operative pain. Feldene is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which is known as NSAID.

How to Take It: Feldene comes in tablet form and for the relief of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, the dosage is normally 20mg once a day, however, this can be split into two if required.  Before taking Feldene it would be a good idea to weigh up the benefits with the risks as it has been linked with an increased risk of serious heart or blood vessel problems such as stroke or heart attackFeldene should only be taken if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is inadvisable to take Feldene if you have ever had an allergic reaction to an NSAID; if you are in the last trimester of pregnancy; or, if you have had or are due to have bypass heart surgery

How It Works: It is thought that like other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Feldene works by blocking substances or chemicals in the body which are linked to inflammation.  Feldene does not treat the cause of the inflammation, only the actual inflammation and the pain associated with the inflammation.

Some Side Effects: Side effects of Feldene can include headaches, loss of appetite, stomach ulcers, vertigo, constipation, dizziness, fluid retention, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney problems.
