Famvir
Other Names: Famciclovir
Commonly Prescribed For: Famvir is an antiviral medication which is prescribed for the treatment of the herpes virus. It does not cure the herpes virus but can reduce the symptoms caused by the infection. Illnesses which are caused by the herpes virus include chicken pox, shingles, cold sores and genital herpes.
How to Take It: For maximum effect, Famvir should be taken as soon as symptoms are first noticed. Famvir comes in tablet form and should be swallowed with water. It can be taken with or without food but taking it with food can reduce any chance of getting an upset stomach. The full prescribed dose should be taken as symptoms may appear to be gone before the course has been completed. You should avoid allowing any infected areas to come into contact with other people as the herpes virus is very contagious.
How It Works: The effects of Famvir are greatly increased if taken within 48 hours of symptoms. The herpes virus cannot be cured but stays in the body until it becomes active. Famvir works by fighting the infection once it flares up. Studies have shown that in the case of shingles, Famvir helped to reduce pain and the shingles lesions healed faster.
Some Side Effects: Side effects of Famvir can include headaches, diarrhea, confusion, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and mild skin rash.
