How to Take It: Alprostadil can be both injected directly in the patient penis or in a suppository form. In the case of the injections your doctor should teach you exactly how to apply the injection in the side of your penis. The suppository version of Alprostadil usually comes with a special system that is inserted in the urethra to properly dispense the pill.

How it Works: Alprostadil relaxes some muscles and blood vessels in the penis causing an almost immediate erection. The effects are almost immediate and last between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the patient.

Some Side Effects: Alprostadil can cause bleeding from the urethra, severe pain or irritation in the penis and testicles, headaches, dizziness, penis numbness, rash on the skin of the penis, erections that last more than four hours, and it might cause burning and itching in your sexual partner.
