Coumadin
Other Names: Warfarin.
Commonly Prescribed For: Coumadin is generally prescribed for preventing blood clots from growing larger in the blood vessels. This medication can be used for treating patients with irregular heartbeat, prosthetic heart valves, and heart attack. Coumadin can also be used for treating and preventing venous thrombosis. Coumadin is commonly used with other medications.
How to Take it: Coumadin is available in the form of a tablet to be taken via mouth. This medication is normally taken once every day, either with food or without food. Take Coumadin as prescribed, around the same time daily.
How it Works: Coumadin belongs to a group of drugs known as anticoagulants (blood thinners). This medication reduces the ability of blood of clot.
Some Side Effects: Common side effects include gas, feeling cold, abnormal taste, loss of hair, and tiredness. Some serious side effects include hives, erection of the penis, rash, feelings of numbness, itching, joint or muscle pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing, flu-like symptoms, inflammation of the face, or lower legs, yellowing of the skin, hoarseness, loss of appetite, chest pain or pressure, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and nausea.
