Clavulanic Acid

Other Names: Augmentin

Commonly Prescribed For: Clavulanic Acid is generally combined with other medication known as Amoxicillin for treating certain kinds of infections caused due to bacteria, such as urinary tract infections, sinuses, lung infections, and skin infections. This medication can be used to beat resistance in bacteria, which secretes beta-lactamase enzymes.

How to Take it: Clavulanic acid together with amoxicillin is available in the form of a tablet, as a suspension liquid, and as a chewable tablet to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken 3 times every day for ever eight hours or two times every day for every 12 hours, along with meals. Chew and crush the chewable tablet before swallowing. Take this medication as prescribed, around the same time daily.

How it Works: Clavulanic Acid belongs to a group of drugs known as beta-lactamase inhibitors. This medication works to thwart bacteria from destroying Amoxicillin.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include diarrhea, mild skin rash, and upset stomach. Some serious side effects include severe skin rash, yellowing of the skin, itching, vaginal itching or discharge, hives, wheezing, and trouble breathing.
