Commonly Prescribed For: Chloroquine is generally prescribed for treating and preventing malaria. This medication can also be used for treating amebiasis. Chloroquine is commonly used with other medications.

How to Take it: Chloroquine is available in the form of a tablet to be taken via mouth. A single dosage of this medication is normally taken once every week to prevent malaria in adults. Take one dose of Chloroquine immediately, followed be half a dose of Chloroquine six to eight hours later for treating attacks of malaria in adults. This medication is combined wit other amebicides for treating amebiasis. Take Chloroquine as prescribed.

How it Works: Chloroquine kills the malarial parasites by damaging their genetic material. This medication is used for treating certain conditions caused due to parasites called as extraintestinal amebiasis.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include headache, hair loss, loss of appetite, skin rash or itching, diarrhea, stomach pain and mental or mood changes. Some serious side effects include seeing light flashes, difficulty breathing, and blurred vision, convulsions, reading or seeing difficulty, vomiting, difficulty hearing, and drowsiness and ringing in the ears.
