Carbimazole
Other Names: Neomercazole.
Commonly Prescribed For: Carbimazole is as imidazole antithyroid, generally used with other medications for treating hyperthyroidism. This medication can also be used for treating patient with thyroidectomy (part or whole confiscation of thyroid gland) before radioiodine treatment.
How to Take it: Carbimazole is available in the form of a tablet to be taken via mouth. Nearly 10 to 60 mg of this medication should be taken every day as per the severity of the associated disorder. Take this medication as prescribed.
How it Works: Carbimazole belongs to a class of medication called pro-drugs. This medication works to prevent the combination of iodine with other components for forming thyroid hormones. This ultimately decreases the ability of the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones.
Some Side Effects: Common side effects include headache, skin rash, itching, and hair loss, nausea, yellowing of the skin, blood disorders, joint pain, hepatic disorders, diarrhea, muscle pain, abnormal taste, constipation, nausea, and stomach aches. Some serious side effects include bone marrow suppression, fever, and mouth ulcers.
