Commonly Prescribed For: Calan is generally prescribed for treating irregular heartbeats and high blood pressure. This medication can also be used for controlling atrial fibrillation. Calan is commonly used with other medications.

How to Take it: Calan is available in the form of a regular tablet, as a long-acting tablet and as a capsule to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken 3 times every day. The extended-release tablet is normally taken once or twice every day. The extended-release tablet should not be chewed or crushed; instead the tablet should be swallowed entirely. Take this medication as prescribed.

How it Works: It is said to be a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so that the heart doesn’t require pumping hardly. This medication enhances the supply of blood to the heart for controlling chest pain. It normalizes heart rhythm.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include constipation, vivid or unusual dreams, dizziness or lightheadedness, slow heartbeat, headache, feeling of warmth, fatigue, upset stomach and excessive tiredness. Some serious side effects include inflammation of the face, lips, or lower legs, severity of chest pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever, fainting, irregular heartbeat and yellowing of the akin.
