Commonly Prescribed for: Bethanecol Chloride is used to treat acute postoperative and postpartum non obstructive (functional) urinary retention. It is also prescribed for patients with neurogenic atony of the urinary bladder with retention.
How to Take It: Dosage must be tailored to each patient’s need; it depends on the type and severity of the condition treated. Bethanecol Chloride must be injected or orally taken when the stomach is empty. Otherwise, you may experience nausea and vomiting. If ever necessary, its benefits can be abolished promptly by atropine.
How It Works: Without crossing blood-brain barrier, Bethanechol Chloride stimulates parasympathetic nervous system, stimulates gastric motility and tone and may restore rhythmic peristalsis.
Some Side Effects: Reactions due to oral admission is lesser than the ones due to injection. If the dose is increased, such reactions may occur: malaise, abdominal cramps, colicky pain, nausea, diarrhea, salivation, too frequent urinary, headache, a fall in blood pressure with reflex tachycardia, vasomotor response, extreme sweating, bronchial constriction, breathing difficulty, lacrimation or miosis.
