Avodart

Other Names: Dutasteride

Commonly Prescribed For: Avodart is generally prescribed for treating an enlarged prostrate known as benign prostrate hyperplasia.

How to Take it: Avodart is available in the form of a capsule to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken once every day, either with food or without food. Do not crush or chew the capsules, instead swallow the capsules entirely. Take Avodart as prescribed, around the same time daily.

How it Works: Avodart belongs to a group of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It blocks the production of certain substance, which leads to enlargement of the prostrate. This can shrink the prostrate, thereby relieving certain symptoms of BPH.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include inflammation of the face or tongue, blistering of the skin, tightness of the chest, lumpy skin rash and fever. Some serious side effects include inability to have an erection, breast tenderness or enlargement; problems while ejaculating decrease in sex drive.
