Other Names: Amoxicillin, Amoxyl, Amoxil.

Commonly Prescribed For: Augmentin is combined with clavulanic acid for treating some infections caused due to bacteria including urinary tract infections, sinus, lung infections and skin infections.

How to Take it: Augmentin is available in the form of a tablet, as a suspension liquid and a chewable tablet to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken 3 times every day for every 8 hours or two times every day for every 12 hours, along with a meal. Chew and crush the chewable tablet entirely before swallowing. Take this medication as prescribed.

How it Works: Augmentin belongs to a group of drugs known as penicillin-like inhibitors. It thwarts the growth of bacteria. Amoxicillin belongs to a group of drugs known as beta-lactamase inhibitors.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include diarrhea, mild skin rash and upset stomach. Some serious side effects include severe skin rash, yellowing of the skin, itching, vaginal itching and discharge, difficulty breathing and wheezing.
