Commonly Prescribed For: Atorvastatin calcium is generally combined with another diet for decreasing the danger of heart attack. This medication can also be used to reduce the quantity of cholesterol present in the blood. It is commonly used with other medications.

How to Take it: Atorvastatin calcium is available in the form of a tablet to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken once every day, either with food or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablets, instead swallow the tablets entirely. Take this medication as prescribed, around the same time daily.

How it Works: Atorvastatin calcium belongs to a group of drugs known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. It impedes the production of fatty substances in the body.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include joint pain, diarrhea, headache and constipation. Some serious side effects include hoarseness, muscle pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing, lack of energy, itching, fever, hives, chest pain, rash, nausea, yellowing of the skin, extreme tiredness, and flu-like symptoms, unusual bleeding or bruising, and stomach pain.
