Commonly Prescribed For: Aralen is generally prescribed for treating and preventing malaria. This medication can also be used for treating amebiasis. It is commonly used with other medications.

How it Works: Aralen belongs to a class of medications known as antimalarials and amebicides. It kills malarial parasites by damaging their genetic material.

How to Take it: Aralen is available in the form of a tablet to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken once in a week to prevent malaria in adults. Take a dose of Aralen for two days to treat amebiasis. Take this medication along with food to treat upset stomach.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include headache, mood or mental changes, loss of appetite, hair loss, diarrhea, skin rash or itching and upset stomach. Some serious side effects include seeing light flashes, difficulty breathing, blurred vision, convulsions, reading or seeing difficulties, irregular heartbeat, difficulty hearing, vomiting, ringing in the ears and drowsiness.
