Allopurinol
Other Names: Aloprim, Zyloprim.
Commonly Prescribed For: Allopurinol is normally prescribed for treating gout and uric acid present in the body due to certain cancer medications. This medication can also be used for treating and preventing gout attacks.
How to Take it: Allopurinol is available in the form of a tablet to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken once or two times every day, after taking meals. Take Allopurinol as directed, around the same time every day.
How it Works: Allopurinol belongs to a group of drugs known as xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It decreases uric acid production in the body.
Some Side Effects: Common side effects include upset stomach, drowsiness and diarrhea. Some serious side effects include skin rash, itching, painful urination, unexpected weight loss, blood in the urine, and loss of appetite, irritation of the eyes, sore throat and inflammation of the mouth.
