Albenza

Other Names: Albendazole

Commonly Prescribed For: Albenza is normally prescribed for treating parenchymal neurocysticercosis mainly due to active lesions of the poke tapeworm. This medication can also be used for treating cystic hydatid disease of lungs, peritoneum due to the dog tapeworm.

How to Take it: Albenza is available in the form of tablets to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken once or two times every day. Take Albenza as prescribed. Continue taking this medication even if you feel good.

How it Works: Albenza prevents the worm from absorbing sugar by interfering into the absorptive cells. This may cause the worm to lose energy and hence results in its death.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, sore throat, skin rash temporary hair loss and abdominal pain. Some serious side effects include vision changes, dark urine, yellowing of the skin/eyes, unusual tiredness, very stiff neck, easy bruising or bleeding, confusion, severe headache, trouble breathing and other blood disorders.
