Acyclovir
Other Names: Zovirax, Acycloguanosine
Commonly Prescribed For: Acyclovir is used to treat infection caused by the herpes virus. It is also prescribed for chicken pox, cold sores and shingles.
How to Take It: Acyclovir is available in capsules, tablets and also as suspension (liquid) all taken oreally. During treatment is recommended to take the Acyclovir dose at the same time every day. Acyclovir should be taken as soon as the first symptoms of an herpes outbreak start.
How it Works: Acyclovir is an antibiotic. It isn’t a cure for herpes but helps relief pain caused by the sores and heal the infection faster. Acyclovir prevents the enzymes utilized by the herpes virus from reproducing.
Some Side Effects: Acyclovir may cause vomiting, diarrhea, pain particularly in joints, blood in urine, swelling of organs or inability to move body parts, unusual bleeding, loss of consciousness.
