Other Names: Pioglitazone.

Commonly Prescribed For: Actos is combined with other medications for treating type 2 diabetes (a condition where the body doesn’t use insulin usually and does not control the quantity of sugar present in the blood). This medication is not used for treating type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How to Take it: Actos is available in the form of a tablet to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken once, either with food or without food. Take Actos as prescribed, around the same time daily.

How it Works: Actos belongs to a group of drugs known as thiazolidinediones. It reduces the sensitivity of the body to insulin (a substance, which controls the blood sugar level).

Some Side Effects: Common side effects runny nose, sore throat, headache, mouth pain and muscle pain. Some serious side effects include nausea, vision loss, vomiting, blurred vision, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin and dark urine.
