Commonly Prescribed For: Acarbose is normally prescribed with other drugs for treating type 2 diabetes (a condition where the body does not uses insulin normally and hence cannot directly the quantity of sugar present in the blood). It is commonly used with other medications.

How to Take it: Acarbose is available in the form of a tablet to be taken via mouth. This medication is generally taken 3 times every day. Take every dose of this medication along with meals. Take Acarbose as prescribed. Continue this medication even if you feel good.

How it Works: Acarbose retards the action of certain types of chemicals, which breaks the food to discharge glucose into the blood. It is used to slow the food digestion process and avoids the rise of blood glucose levels after meals.

Some Side Effects: Common side effects include shakiness, clumsy or jerky movements, dizziness or lightheadedness, hunger, sweating, pale skin, nervousness or irritability, weakness, abnormal behavior and numbness. Some serious side effects include confusion, loss of consciousness, extreme thirst, blurred vision, seizures, frequent urination and extreme hunger.
