Syphilis is most often a sexually transmitted disease, although it can be passed on through injecting drugs into a vein, from an infected pregnant woman to the unborn infant (congenital syphilis), or through blood transfusions.  It cannot be passed through casual person to person contact, i.e. touching, sharing toilet facilities or sharing things such as cutlery, etc.

Syphilis can be quite dangerous as it can lie in the body undetected and then resurface many years later affecting organs such as the eyes, brain, heart or nervous system.

Syphilis

Primary syphilis starts with painless sores on the skin which are very contagious.  These sores are known as chancres and can if another person comes into contact with these typically during sexual contact, then they will more than likely contract the syphilis infection.

Typically, between two to ten weeks later, more symptoms will appear and this is known as secondary syphilis.  These symptoms include tiredness, headaches, sore throat and skin rashes.  These symptoms will then disappear but the infection can lie dormant for many years and can then return causing organ damage and even organ failure.

Primary syphilis can be quite mild and therefore the patient may not know they even have the disease before passing it on.  It can be treated with antibiotics.

Abstaining from sex is the only definite way to avoid catching the syphilis infection.  However condoms do offer protection.  Sex toys should never be shared.

Heart attacks occur when heart muscles do not receive enough oxygen rich blood and therefore start to die. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but usually occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the blood vessels leading to the heart. If this clot gets large enough it can block the blood supply to the organ.

When an individual suffers a heart attack, the symptoms can include a plethora of conditions. These include coughing, chest pain ranging from a mild discomfort to a crushing pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, ashen colored face (a gray appearance), nausea, vomiting and clammy and sweaty. Pain is usually felt in the chest initially, but can then spread to the arms, wrist, neck, jaw and ears. Less common is pain in the shoulder blades, the abdomen and the back.

Some of the main causes of heart attacks include age (this is thought to be the largest contributing factor, and men over 45 and women over 55 years of age see their risk rise dramatically); angina; high cholesterol levels; diabetes; diet; genetic makeup (hereditary); blood pressure; heart surgery; obesity; physical inactivity; and smoking.

Heart Attack

The quicker a heart attack victim is treated, the more successful their treatment tends to be. Some treatments that can be administered during a heart attack are CPR, manual chest compression, use of a defibrillator, a 300mg dose of aspirin, and sometimes, morphine.

When a part of the small or large intestine (the bowels) becomes blocked, either totally or partially so that stools cannot get through, this is known as a bowel obstruction; and it can happen to anybody.

Blockages can occur for a number of reasons. Some of these include hernia, gallstones, tumors, abnormal growth of tissue, a twisted intestine or foreign body (by swallowing a non-food item).

Bowel Obstruction

A blocked bowel is usually a serious condition that requires medical attention. Sometimes, the intestine may have to be decompressed which is achieved by the insertion of a (nasogastric) tube into the stomach. If this doesn’t manage to resolve the blockage then surgery may be required.

There are some complications associated with bowel obstructions. If not treated, for example, a part of the bowel tissue could die resulting in infection and even in some cases, gangrene. There is also the possibility of the intestine becoming perforated, and this is a medical emergency should it happen.

The symptoms of a blocked bowel can include the total lack of stools as none can get through, or diarrhea as only liquid stools can get through. Pain, bloating and cramps also point to a blocked bowel, as do bad breath and vomiting. Diagnosis of a bowel obstruction is carried out be a physical examination in combination with diagnostic tests.
