A food allergy occurs when someone’s immune system reacts adversely to a particular type of food. When this happens it causes inflammation in certain bodily tissues and can even be life threatening. A food allergy should not be confused with food intolerance because, although in both situations the body can react to even a very small amount of food, food intolerance is not caused by an individual’s immune system; rather, it’s the digestive system.
Although actual food allergies are very rare and tend to run in the family, some people avoid consuming specific foods because they are under the mistaken assumption that they’re allergic to them. On average, only one in hundred adults and three in a hundred infants have food allergies. An individual would be more at risk if they or their family suffer from any allergic conditions such as asthma, eczema or hay fever. Only a medical professional will be able to diagnose somebody as having a food allergy.

Food Allergies
In principle, people could be allergic to any type of food, but the most common ones appear to be the following: milk, fish, shellfish, eggs, wheat, soya beans, peanuts and certain fruit and veg.
Food allergies are usually diagnosed by blood or skin tests, or a going through a food elimination program.

Cholesterol is a lipid, or fat, of the body, and it is this along with another lipid called triglyceride that are vital building blocks of a cell. They are also used in the production of hormones as well as producing energy. Cholesterol is mainly produced in the liver, but it can also be ingested with certain foods.
There are two types of cholesterol and just to keep things simple, these can be classed as the good sort (high-density lipoprotein or HDL) and the bad sort (low-density lipoprotein or LDL). The HDL is effective in reducing cholesterol by transporting it back to the liver from where it is eliminated, whereas the LDL can contribute to certain diseases associated with the heart or blood circulation. HDL levels can be raised through exercise and LDL lowered by eating less saturated fat or sometimes with the aid of medication.
Cholesterol levels can be hereditary as well as being influenced by which part of the world the sufferer lives in. Northern Europeans have higher levels than their Southern counterparts, for example, and a much higher level than Asian people.

High Cholesterol
There are no symptoms of having high cholesterol and it is only one factor of many that can contribute to hardening of the arteries. Other factors include smoking, diet, alcohol intake, exercise and body weight. If going on a cholesterol lowering diet doesn’t help to reduce the levels, then medication will be required to assist the process.

A sore or hole in the lining of an organ is known as an ulcer. A stomach ulcer is known as a gastric ulcer while a duodenal ulcer is an ulcer in the duodenum which is part of the small intestine. Duodenal ulcers occur more frequently in men and usually between the ages of 20-45, while stomach ulcers occur more often than not in people over the age of 50.
The stomach is protected from acid by a lining of mucus but if the lining is damaged then the acid can come into contact with the stomach or intestine wall, causing an ulcer.
Symptoms of an ulcer include abdominal pain, feeling sick after eating, loss of appetite, weight loss, or difficulty swallowing. More serious symptoms include black or tar like stools, severe stomach pain, or vomiting blood.

Stomach Ulcers
Ulcers can be caused by bacteria known as Helicobacter Pylori and also use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin. Other causes of ulcers are smoking and drinking alcohol and it is also thought to run in some families. Stress can aggravate an ulcer as it causes the stomach to produce more acid.
Diagnosis of an ulcer is confirmed through a procedure known as an endoscopy. This is done in a hospital and it involves a thin tube being passed down to the stomach through the mouth and gullet. This can show the doctor whether an ulcer is present.
Treatment of an ulcer depends on whether the cause was a bacterium or by using NSAIDs. Proton pump inhibitors are prescribed for ulcers which have not been caused by the H pylori bacteria and they work by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach. For ulcers caused by H pylori bacteria, treatment is usually a combination of proton pump inhibitors and two antibiotics.
