Birth control pills are basically pills that are taken on a daily basis and which contain certain hormones that will change the way the uterus and ovaries perform thereby preventing pregnancy. Most birth control pills today are classified as combination pills which means they contain both progesterone and estrogen hormones which prevent the release of eggs in a women’s monthly cycle (ovulation). If there are no eggs released, a woman cannot get pregnant.
Another function of the pill is that it thickens the mucus found around the cervix, making it very hard for sperm to get into the uterus and finding any eggs that could have been released. The pills hormones sometimes affect the uterus’ lining as well so that any eggs released will find it very difficult to attach to the sides.

Most combo pills come in 21-day or 28-day packets, with one taken each day. With a 21-day pack you will stop taking the pill for seven days at the end of the cycle and with the 28-day pack you will take seven pills without any hormones at the end of the cycle. Women then tend to get their periods when they cease taking the pills that contain the hormones.

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is the virus which can lead to AIDS. There are many ways to contract this virus, with the most common being through unprotected sex and the sharing of needles.
People who are infected with HIV may initially not realize there is anything wrong with them as they do not show any symptoms. Nevertheless, some people tend to develop some flu like symptoms which can last for several weeks. Some of these symptoms may include fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, aching muscles and joints, rashes and swollen lymph glands.

When the virus enters the body, it takes residence in white blood cells that are known as CD4 lymphocytes. The virus takes total control of these cells and starts producing billions of replicas of itself every day.
Once infection of HIV occurs, the body starts to attack the virus and because of this the virus cannot make any copies of itself. This in turn leads to a false sense of wellness as although one would still have HIV, the infected person will begin to look and feel better. Unfortunately, during this period the virus is still attacking the lymph nodes, which are the body’s immune system center.
During the course of ten to fifteen years, the HIV manages to kill so many of the CD4 cells that the body no longer has the ability to fight off infections. Once the CD4 cell count drops below a certain number (200 or lower per mL – the average is 600 to 1000) the sufferer is classed as having AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Once a person has AIDS, the risk of infection form almost anything can cause fatal complications.

Drug allergies are adverse reactions to medication drugs and these reactions can be separated into three groups. First are those not actually related to the drug in question at all, but are coincidental and attributed to other mitigating factors associated with the illness or disease. Second are common predictable reactions like side effects related to taking other medication at the same time, or having an overdose. The third is unpredictable and uncommon reactions of which quite a few are allergic reactions that typically involve the immune system, being either immediate or delayed in reaction.
Allergic reactions can vary greatly from simple, slight rashes to very severe anaphylactic reactions of the immune system. Some drugs that can cause allergic reactions include heart drugs such as ACE inhibitors, antibiotics like penicillin, anesthetic drugs such as muscle relaxants, morphine, aspirin like drugs such as ibuprofen, chemotherapy drugs, antiseptics like iodine, vaccines such as tetanus, and colorings or preservatives in certain medications.
Reactions usually occur within one hour of taking the medication and can involve a measle-like rash that is very itchy. Some life threatening reactions may involve skin blistering with peeling accompanied by fever.

Common Allergic Reactions
Treatments of various drug allergic reactions involve the immediate withdrawal of the offending drug and then the administration of an antihistamine medicine. In severe allergic reactions, adrenaline and steroids may be used to save a life.
