In nearly all countries of the world, back pain is the single largest cause of absence due to sickness from work. It is a chronic problem in a lot of people and a large proportion suffer from recurring problems. More often than not, the pain is due to minor damage that may have occurred to the muscles of ligaments of the back due to a variety of reasons such as lifting, twisting, being overweight or even standing in the wrong sort of position.

On other occasions it can be caused by more serious medical conditions such as a slipped disc, a disease like arthritis, muscle tears or scoliosis (curvature of the spine). When first suffering from back pain it is always advisable to visit a physician just to clarify the pain is not due to a treatable medical condition, and this is especially true in younger people.

Common Back Pain

Symptoms of back pain include a sharp pain in a specific area, a generalized ache in the region of the buttocks or lower back, stiffness and difficulty bending over. When the pain is due to a prolapsed disc there could be pressure on a nerve which will send pain radiating down the back of a leg to the foot. This is known as sciatica.

Back pain can occur to anyone of any age, but is more common in individuals who are overweight and those who sit in a slouching position for long periods of time. Treatment for back pain depends on the cause, but things like pain killers, losing weight and changing posture are the norm for “non-medical” back pain.

Genital warts are considered to be the most common form of STD (sexually transmitted disease) and are caused by the virus called human papilloma virus (HPV).  Genital warts can be transmitted during sexual activity and by skin-to-skin contact with an individual who has the virus.

When the warts appear after infection, they can either be internal or external. In women they tend to be located in the vulva, the vagina, the anus and the cervix, whereas in men they can be found on the penis, the urethra and scrotum, as well as inside or on the anus.

It usually takes from between two weeks right up to several months for warts to appear after infection, and most individuals affected will not have any symptoms at all. People that do develop the warts may notice tiny, flesh-like growths which may appear anywhere in the anal or genital area. These are normally painless, but sometimes they can start itching.

Genital Warts

If an individual suspects that they may have genital warts, a medical appointment would have to be made, where the doctor would carry out a physical examination of the entire genital region, the anus included. The virus can never be eliminated from the body once infected, so outbreaks can occur spontaneously. Treatment for the visible warts though, include special liquids or cream put onto the wart, cryotherapy (freezing the warts off) or heat treatment to burn them off, removal by surgery or a less common method is to inject them with a certain drug.

The testicles are found within the scrotum which is a loose sac of skin hanging down behind the penis.  The function of the testicles is to produce sperm and the male sex hormone testosterone.  Most of the time any lumps or swelling within the testicles are benign but it is natural for people to worry when they have found a lump.

Testicular torsion results in swelling of the testicles if the testicle has become twisted.  This interrupts blood flow and causes a large tender distension.  It often happens in developing boys who are experiencing puberty but has also been know to happen in men in their 20’s although it is quite rare.  Testicular torsion is a medical emergency due to the fact that it needs to be rectified by surgery within 6 hours or there is a risk that the testicle will be lost.

Symptoms of testicular torsion include nausea; vomiting; swelling of the scrotum; fever; abdominal pain; the need to urinate often; and, excruciating pain in one testicle.  The cause of testicular torsion results from a spermatic cord that is too long.  The spermatic cord is where the testicles hang from and in some boys this cord is too long leading to increased movement of the testicle which means the cord becoming twisted.  If it twists too much it will cut off the blood supply and the testicle will die.  Testicular torsion can sometimes just happen for no reason at all or it can be the result of strenuous exercise or other physical activity.

An ultrasound scan can be done to confirm suspicion of testicular torsion. Surgery needs to take place almost immediately to save the testicle.  The surgeon will have to cut the scrotum and untwist the cord.  He will then sew the cord to the scrotum to prevent this happening again.
